Gin Swizzles – Celebrating the End of Summer

Gin Swizzle

Last week, Mark and I spent our Labor Day relaxing with family.  We started out by celebrating our nephew’s 10th birthday with Mark’s side of the family and ended it at my parents’ house with a little hot tubbin, cocktailing, and rib-eating (with my dad’s own BBQ sauce recipe mmm-mmm!)

As for the cocktail, we wanted to make sure we had something that would help celebrate the end of the summer – something that would be nice and refreshing but not too sweet.  Gin Swizzles were perfect for the occasion with their refreshing fizz and tart taste.

If you’d like to try a Gin Swizzle, here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 measures/3 tbsp gin
  • 1/4 measure/1 tsp simple syrup
  • Juice of a lime
  • 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters

Combine all ingredients into a shaker or tall tumbler.  Mix vigorously with a swizzle-stick or spoon, as if you were beating an egg for an omelette. You could also probably get the same effect vigorously shaking a cocktail shaker for a minute or so. When the drink is good and foaming, strain it in to a tall glass.  Since we were sipping on ours outside, we finished them off with a few ice cubes

How did you celebrate your Labor Day?  Did you partake in a tasty cocktail?
